Deshedding: What It Is, Who Needs It, and How Often

If you’ve ever felt like you could knit a second dog out of the fur on your floor, this one’s for you. Deshedding is one of our most popular grooming services – and for good reason. It keeps your dog comfortable, your home tidier, and your pup’s coat in beautiful condition.

So what is deshedding? It’s a specialised grooming treatment that removes the loose, dead undercoat that ordinary brushing at home tends to miss. Using the right tools and technique, we gently lift out all that trapped fur before it ends up on your couch, your clothes and your favourite black jumper.

Who needs it? Double-coated breeds are the main customers here – think Golden Retrievers, Border Collies, Huskies, German Shepherds, Labradors and the many gorgeous mixes in between. These dogs have a soft undercoat beneath their topcoat, and it sheds heavily, especially as the seasons change.

Why it matters. Beyond keeping fur off everything you own, deshedding helps prevent painful matting, lets your dog’s skin breathe, and actually helps them regulate their temperature better. A coat free of dead undercoat keeps your pup cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

How often? For most double-coated dogs, every 8 weeks works beautifully, with more frequent sessions during spring and autumn when they’re “blowing” their coat. Short-coated dogs shed too and can benefit from a regular deshed as well.

One important note – deshedding is never about shaving a double coat. That coat does an important job, so the goal is always to thin out the dead fur while protecting the healthy coat underneath.
